During the 2010-11 school year, fifth grade girls in Western Iowa and into Nebraska and South Dakota have the opportunity to learn ways to respond to emotional bullying and develop healthy friendships. A Way Through, LLC, developed the “Bully-Proof” workshops in collaboration with Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa as part of the When Girls Hurt Girls ® program. The 25 workshops for all girls in fifth grade follow seven successful community forums about relational aggression, a form of bullying, hosted by the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa in Spring 2010.
“We are very excited to collaborate with Girl Scouts, a youth organization that is showing tremendous leadership on the issue of female bullying,” said Blair Wagner, co-founder of A Way Through, LLC. “The community forums allowed parents to see how relational aggression behaviors can be managed by the girls. These new workshops empower the girls to effectively respond to female bullying situations so they can have happier friendships.”
The workshops will take place in communities across Western Iowa starting in November. A Way Through will join Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa in presenting another round of community forums about relational aggression/female bullying in the spring of 2011.
“Around the age of 10, girls have likely experienced relational aggression, so they know what it is, but they may not realize it can get worse or change forms,” said Jane Balvanz, an elementary school counselor and co-founder of A Way Through, LLC . “They're at a perfect age to learn preventative techniques and eager enough to practice them. They appreciate being better prepared for grades 6-8 so they can have fun, learn and grow with less worry.”
In addition to the girl workshops and community forums, A Way Through and the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa have an agreement to provide additional training for volunteers and staff about relational aggression.
“We’re proud the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa selected us to teach girls the tools and strategies they need to have successful friendships and to build their courage, confidence and character,” said Wagner. “We also look forward to sharing information about relational aggression in their communities and workplace.”
